Faster drug development for pharma companies

Every aspect of drug development is being accelerated by AI, and pharma companies are likely to be spending over $4bn every year on AI by 2027.

AI is already being widely used to discover new drugs, which could drive up to $50bn a year of future sales.

The number of new drugs developed using AI has already increased ten times in a single year, as shown in recent licence applications in the US.

For example, AI is being used to:

◆ Identify potentially useful molecules for tests

◆ Design and build completely new molecules to fit cell

receptors, etc.

◆ Automate testing of hundreds of molecules

◆ Streamline clinical trials

◆ Analyse data

◆ Write up results

Morgan Stanley has calculated that every 2.5% improvement in preclinical development success rates could lead to an additional thirty new drug approvals over ten years.

AI will scan 10 million potential drug molecules

Often the key is to identify a target receptor on the surface of human cells, or bacteria or viruses, and to work out its precise shape.

Once that happens, AI is used to scan hundreds of thousands of potential molecules that might fit that receptor, using libraries of existing substances.

AI can also design new molecules from scratch, ones that have never existed before in the history of our planet, and work out how best to manufacture them.

Much of early drug discovery is ‘grunt’ work – highly repetitive, and very time-consuming for pharma teams.

However, the entire process is suitable for automation.

We can use AI to grow hundreds of samples of human cells from a biopsy of cancer, each group of cells in a separate vial; then to drop a tiny amount of a molecule into each vial to see what happens, using hundreds of different substances. Each vial needs to be separately monitored, cells analysed, results quantified.

Every step in that process can be automated and overseen by AI.
