THE GREATEST THREAT to our world from AI will be its use by criminal gangs and hostile states. Over the next decade, such attacks will strike hundreds of thousands of companies, destroy wealth, paralyse governments, weaken armed forces, invade privacy on a global scale, knock out hospitals and kill thousands of sick patients. All at very low cost. Most larger-scale attacks make huge amounts of money, from ransoms or rewards from hostile governments.

In my book The Future of (Almost) Everything I warned that combining Big Data with the Internet of Things and the Cloud would create mega-targets for criminals and hostile countries. But next-generation AI will increase these risks a thousand times more. The ultimate target for hostile states will be advanced AI systems of another country.

AI is the greatest opportunity in history to steal money and disrupt countries.

If cybercrime were a country, it would be the world’s third-largest economy, with 560,000 new types of ‘malware’ released every single day. Most companies have been attacked, while six out of ten are struggling to find people with the right skills to protect themselves.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE will impact your life, family, friends, workplace and wider world, in ways that most people can hardly begin to imagine. AI has potential for enormous good, to transform our world for the better, but it also has the potential to cause great harm.

I have written many other books about trends, but writing this one has been a shocking and disturbing process, one which has raised many questions in my own mind about the future of humanity, in the context of other challenges such as war and our changing climate.

Plugging human brains into the digital universe

Here is just one example of a new development in AI with huge implications for society. A rapidly growing number of people say that they would like to plug their own brains directly into the digital universe sometime soon, which of course also means AI. And the technology is now available to begin to do just that. In the US, 5% of eighteen- to twenty-nine-year-olds ‘definitely would consider’ a wireless chip inserted into their own brains over the next twelve months, while 8% ‘probably would’. This means one in eight young adults in the US are seriously thinking about becoming digitally enhanced in some way...

MOST OF TODAY’S AI is highly specialised and limited – for example facial recognition at passport control, or fraud detection for a credit card company. These systems are based on what we call Large Language Models, using pattern recognition.

However, next generation Super-Smart AI will be broadly intelligent (some call this Artificial General Intelligence or AGI).

Super-Smart AI will be aware of context and able to understand, learn and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks, solving problems in flexible and adaptable ways, acting autonomously like humans.

Super-Smart AI will be able to do just about any task that a human can do – far beyond in many cases. But to achieve this, we need to learn from the human brain.

OVER $2TN WILL BE SPENT by companies and governments on AI between now and 2030, and most of that will be extra people costs, employing vast numbers of systems developers and AI experts, which tells you all you need to know about job prospects in the IT sector.

But as we will see, developers and their computer systems make mistakes which can take decades to become apparent, and all kinds of errors will find themselves worked into AI, some of which will have very serious consequences.

One of the areas of work that in theory will be most impacted by AI is coding software itself. Over the last two decades we have already seen the development of a growing number of high-level languages, where words and phrases are interpreted by software to tell the system what to do.

And the software industry is one where many wild forecasts have been made, alleging that major disruption and redundancies will surely happen on a large scale. Indeed, surveys of software developers show that 30% believe that their own jobs will be replaced by AI ‘in the foreseeable future’ – but how soon is that?

And are they right?

* "How AI Will Change Your Life - A Futurist's Guide to a Super-Smart World" - Patrick Dixon's new book on AI is published in September 2024 by Profile Books

What will be the future impact of AI / Artificial Intelligence on our wider world?  The answer is that it will be massive in every dimension of human life.

Most of the influence of AI on your own life will be hidden, and hard to understand but the total combined effect will be very powerful, affecting decisions you make, influencing your thoughts, shaping your opinions, affecting your own unconscious bias and preferences.

To help explore these issues, I thought it would be revealing to have a conversation (below) about the future of AI with AI itself - using ChatGTP, a powerful Artificial Intelligence engine, which has learned about the world by analysing billions of words written by human beings.  My conclusion about the conversation is that ChatGTP is not telling the truth when it comes to the downsides of AI.

Word-based machines like ChatGPT are running out of text to learn from

Word-based AI machines like ChatGPT are already up against a limit in their training programmes. For example, ChatGTP has already read most of the available words online and is rapidly running out of new material to learn from! So the next step-wise improvement will need to come from other innovations in Artificial Intelligence, and from actually engaging with live human beings.

We can expect another major extension of AI language learning by feeding AI with recorded content - all the world's TV, radio and films for example.  But the total number of new words in all that is surprisingly small - human beings can't speak much faster than 130 words a minute, so even an hour of TV rarely contains more than 6000 words.

So what of the future?  How good will such word-based engines be by 2025?  Answer: good enough to convince most people most of the time that they are chatting online to a human being.

AI is already good enough to pass some student exams

The AI system is already good enough to deliver coursework for exams, complete homework assignments, write press releases or information bulletins, write computer code, and so on.

Billions of pages of text have already been generated by AI bots like ChatGTP, potentially swamping the web and search engines with automated articles, social media posts and so on.

This is already degradingthe experience of human beings searching for world-class content, amongst all the automatically generated clutter.

Text produced by AI is being swept up into the pool of all available text to train all AI future chatbots - so that AI text begins to train AI to produce more AI text.  This could easily result in a distortion, subtle at first, for example in literary styles. It will mean that early AI bots may have a profound impact on the language capabilities and "personality" of bots that follow.

So here below is the AI view of the future of AI.  You will notice that many of the answers are quite upbeat and tend to avoid discussions of risks from AI, threats in a world dominated by Artificial Intelligence.  Text created by ChatGTP is in italics.  My own comments are in bold....

OUR LIVES ARE totally dependent on the integrity and completeness of online search engines such as Google.

However, for a decade now, search engines have been stuck in a rut.

Search algorithms may be smarter, but they are still too easily deceived by poor content, and all they do is direct people to web pages. But what if there is no web page that answers the question properly?

Can we create new web content on the fly, in real time?

That was one of the motivations for Google to invest $2bn in Anthropic, as a rival to OpenAI ChatGPT. However, if most people start reading AI summaries of online content, in answer to queries, then actual website visits will be reduced, and that really matters to those whose content has been raided by AI to generate those summaries.

As a result, next-generation AI search may end up destroying the quality of online content, causing it to degrade and go out of date, by removing financial rewards for website owners.

What is the future of AI? Parts of this post on Artificial Intelligence were written by a revolutionary bot called ChatGPTAI already predicts the weather.  What about using Artificial Intelligence to predict other types of events or using AI to forecast how people will behave? Infosys has invested hugely in predictive analytics using AI, for example in the oil and gas sector.  Engineers planted around 30 sensors on several oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, and connected their data outputs to AI.  The AI sensors were recording things like temperature, air pressure, low frequency vibrations, high pitched sounds and so on, and matching the data to other events such as mechanical breakdowns.  After a few weeks, the team had an alert from the Artificial Intelligence system, warning that there was going to be a problem soon on one of the rigs, which was not taken very seriously because the AI system had only just been set up.  A few days later there was a major incident, and the engineers realised that AI discovered how to prevent disasters.  But how?  AI had detected unusual and obscure data patterns beyond any human understanding.

The same has happened with doctors reading X rays of bones or 3D scans of the human brain.  An AI diagnostic system was fed with tens of thousands of images, matched with diagnosis made at the time by experts.  AI was also fed older images of the same person.  So for example, a brain tumour may have been obvious in the later images but invisible to the human eye in earlier ones.  And as a result, in many hospitals around the world, AI is now detecting cancers far earlier than any human being can manage. Indeed, AI is better at image analysis than the human beings that trained AI.  Not just for medical images, but any images:  AI face recognition, AI recognition of people by the way they walk, and so on...

Future of Surveillance using AI - and what 2030 Artificial Intelligence will mean for privacy and freedom. Next generation state surveillance, use and abuse by dictatorships and security services as well as private companies and individuals

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - AI Artificial Intelligence Robotics Cybersecurity

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU – George Orwell’s 1984 gives a chilling picture of how technology could be used by a dictator to control millions.

But Artificial Intelligence tools available today have advanced far beyond what Orwell saw.  Most governments of larger nations are using a wide range of digital tools to secretly monitor people on a very large scale.

AI is taking this to an entirely new level including instantaneous, accurate face recognition from fixed video cameras in public places, through to recognition by mobile cameras worn by police or undercover agents.

Tell us about the new edition of your book The Future of Almost Everything - in it is a chapter on life in 2120, how did you go about trying to forecast that far ahead? Most people would think it impossible.

It was an interesting process. When you are that far out, you are almost in the realms of science fiction, but remember that the greatest SciFi writers have often had extraordinary vision and correctly anticipated many things we take for granted today. I have been forecasting trends for over 30 years now, and the reason I'm still here, having worked with over 400 of the world's top 2000 companies, is because I've found that major trends tend to change in relatively predictable ways, while human nature is basically unchanged. And even technologies that change very rapidly are usually doing so in ways that are fairly obvious when you think about it. The broad direction of major global trends is usually very clear to experts in each industry or region, while we may debate about exact timing and likely impact....

How a single hack could destroy your company. With 3bn accounts hacked in just one company, cyberattacks are greatest risk to large business, nations and wider world. Truth about Cybersecurity and AI. What to do about it. Futurist keynote speaker - POST

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - AI Artificial Intelligence Robotics Cybersecurity

What happens when you combine Robotics, Artificial Intelligence / AI, the Internet of Things, Big Data and Cloud Computing, to the world of banking, telcos, mobile devices and personal computers?

The answer is the you get the biggest target for criminals that the world has ever seen - all waiting online to be attached and exploited in a billion different ways using little more than a couple of computers, owned by very smart geeks. Never in human history has it been possible for one person, sitting in a bedroom at home in a distant land, to create such havoc and chaos, to seize such power.  So what do we do about it?

Cyber-crime will be one of the greatest threats to our world over the next 50 years, and far beyond, into centuries to come.  There is no way back from such a future, except by dismantling all the global e-systems that link us increasingly together. (Extract from book The Future of Almost Everything by Futurist keynote speaker Patrick Dixon.)

Truth about Robots - will robots destroy millions of jobs? What future for human beings at work? Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Keynote Speaker

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - AI Artificial Intelligence Robotics Cybersecurity

Yesterday I shared a platform with a ROBOT to give a keynote (for EY / Ernst & Young) - as I do regularly....but I'm at no risk whatsoever of losing my job to the automaton.

I have worked with over 400 of the world's largest companies over the last few years, as a Futurist advisor / keynote speaker - and huge numbers of them are worried about robotics / AI / Artificial Intelligence. What does it mean for our business? Are we investing enough in Big Data analytics? How will competitors attack our markets using robotics and next-generation automation. How will Artificial Intelligence control our future?

At the same time, in the media everyday we see sensational headlines such as "Hundreds of millions of jobs will be lost to robots", suggesting that humankind will never be able to find enough work for tomorrow's people, because so many jobs will be done by machines....

Truth about Blockchain and BitCoins – impact of Blockchain on your industry, business and wider world. BitCoin and other cryptocurrencies - keynote comment

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - AI Artificial Intelligence Robotics Cybersecurity

I have advised hundreds of the world’s largest corporations on digital trends, and one of the biggest that CEOs and boards are now talking about is Blockchain. What is Blockchain and what does it mean for us?  Could Blockchain wipe out our business, or will Blockchain help us grow? Here is a comment after my recent keynote for the global team of Generali Insurance, on Blockchain.

Blockchain means that anyone in the world with online access can prove a particular document exists, when it was sent, who it was sent to and so on.  We can also prove that an event has taken place, in a way which is fully transparent to everyone who needs to know this around the world. The implications of this are going to be huge.  And it will be many years before we work it all out.

How to make money from Big Data - and why LITTLE DATA is what really matters. Big Data spots a pattern - Little Data spots a person

Futurist Keynote Speaker: Posts, Slides, Videos - AI Artificial Intelligence Robotics Cybersecurity

Big Data is used by every large corporation, banks, governments and so on to make links between past events, and to predict future events. Billions of dollars are being spent (mostly wasted) by companies trying to spot patterns in trillions of data items. Big Data is used heavily to try to predict customer behaviour and to target marketing campaigns.

However the REAL value lies in around around 0/5% of all the data.  Big Data is about spotting patterns but Little Data is all about spotting a person - turning data into real commercial value. Comment by Patrick Dixon, Futurist and Keynote Conference Speaker. Need a world-class Big Data keynote speaker for your event? Phone or e-mail Patrick Dixon now.
