A lot of nonsense was talked by many HR leaders during COVID Lockdown about the end of offices and permanent massive shift to working at home. Just as a lot of other nonsense was talked about how millions of people would never go to a physical food shop again, having got used to ordering online.

At first sight 100% virtual working looked great: less cost, less commuting time and so on. But then the problems gradually became more obvious - just as I had predicted many times. The fact is that most companies that tolerate 80-100% home working for most of their teams will lose out to competitors in the longer term.

Senior executives who actually get on the plane and turn up at a potential client's office, take them out to dinner and so on, are FAR more likely to close their first big deal than their main competitor who wants to save on air fare and travel time and just do a sales pitch on Teams. Especially in emerging markets like Middle East or Asia...

And in the meantime, expect those working from home to be particularly at risk from AI / Artificial Intelligence systems.

What major HR trends do you see at the moment? This is a very confusing time for business leaders and HR directors, with chaos in energy markets related to Russia, disruptions in supply chains, huge inflation, ongoing impact of COVID, impact of AI / Artificial Intelligence on jobs and many other factors. What will all this mean for the future of people management, talent acquisition, leadership development, workplace motivation, home working, virtual teams and career development? In my book The Future of Almost Everything, I warned in 2019 about a possible new viral pandemic, about the risk of Russia taking military action in response to fears of NATO expansion, and wrote that oil prices could reach $145. I always say that the world can change faster than you can hold a board meeting, so HR leaders need more than one strategy. We need to have backup plans for all important things in the business. This is fundamental to risk management and agility, especially in Human Resource Management....

COVID just accelerated a few of them. So we need to go far beyond virtual teams or hybrid working

For example: a growing focus on better work-life balance, more flexible hours, permission to work at home at least two days a week.

But these things will not be enough. We will also see a greater focus on corporate purpose, helping each team member understand how they make a difference at work....

At the same time, AI / Artificial Intelligence will transform the daily routines of huge numbers of people doing office-type jobs.

Everyone wants to be happy – most advertisers try to persuade us that the secret of happiness is the next thing we will buy. But we know that long lasting happiness usually depends on many deeper things: friendship, strong family relationships, good health, personal fulfilment and so on.
It is hard to be happy if you have many worries about money, too little or too much. In fact great wealth brings many pressures of its own. Happynomics is about the economics of happiness. Contentment can be measured not only in individuals but also in communities, or indeed across entire nations, looking at a national sense of well-being.
On a national level, Happynomics surveys show that happyness is enhanced to varying degrees by wealth, education, peaceful government and trust, but weakened by things like corruption, insecurity and unemployment.
