I have been teaching for over a decade how speed of change will be a huge challenge for all leaders and will demand Agile Leadership. 

Strategies of large corporations risk being overtaken by events.  Never has this been more true than in the last couple of years with COVID, Russian invasion of Ukraine and other major disruptions. Your world can change faster than you can hold a board meeting - and I'm not just talking about political changes, energy crises, civil conflicts, trade wars or mutant viruses.

Every large business contains hundreds of potential Wild Card risks - each of which may be very unlikely, but the combined risks can be huge - with very high probability of disruption from one event or another in any year. That's why we will see growing emphasis on Leadership Agility, Dynamic Strategy, back-up plans and Adaptive Risk Management.

More than 1 billion cars are on the roads today. But we would need to see that rise to 4 billion for the whole world to have the same level of car ownership as America.

By then, almost all of them will be electric powered, and the majority driven entirely or assisted by AI / Artificial intelligence / robots. Inevitably, roads will be very congested, especially in city centres, many of which will ban private vehicles most or all of the time by 2030. Most new car owners will be in emerging markets over the next 50 years. Chinese people are driving 230 million cars, most than any other nation, 8% owned by 40,000 car rental companies. Private car ownership in China jumped from 1% to 21% from 2002 to 2019, with more than 24 million new cars now sold a year....

Most board room debates about future are not usually about what is going to happen.

Longer term industry trends are usually fairly obvious and well understood by business leaders. The most important issue is often timing. By WHEN will most new cars sold in Europe be electric powered. BY WHEN will use of cash start to fall in America.

Timing really matters. And timing / trends are hugely influenced by customer mood, emotion, soft factors which change customer behaviour. You can have the best Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data analytics, cloud computing, astonishing innovation in the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, Manufacturing 4.0, robotics and automation - but real progress can be surprisingly slower or faster than you expect.

Huge importance of CHP Combined Heat and Power for sustainable heating in cities. Large scale, efficient, integrating multiple energy sources ranging from gas to solar, wind, biomass, heat pumps and so on.  Expect Combined Heat and Power to be increasingly insisted on by government regulators for larger projects, coupled with high insulation and green power generation where possible.

Comments on visit to Brussels after giving keynote to Euroheat and Power in France recently. Huge challenge in meeting carbon emission targets and reducing threat from climate change / global warming. Decarbonising energy production is relatively easy - converting power generation from coal to gas, adding solar and wind etc.
