Sustainable Manufacturing – Green Tech Innovation

Procter and Gamble has cut water use by 52%, energy by 48% and waste by 53% since 2002, with $13.1 billion of sales. They have used profits to deliver almost 1 billion litres of clean water to the poorest nations. As a result of these things, the company was added to the Global 100 most sustainable corporations in 2009, and is in the FTSE4Good and Dow Jones Best Corporate Citizens List, which encourages people to buy their shares.

Cadbury has reduced packaging across many product lines – for example they saved 202 tons of plastic, equivalent to 25 million plastic bags, by making thinner plastic cases for Easter eggs. They are planning to cut seasonal packaging by another 25%.

Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury have all continued or increased sustainability innovation through the 2008-9 downturn, with efforts ranging from better refrigeration, to reducing packaging waste, ending free plastic bags.

Packaging is a major user of energy in most retail industries. Smurfit Kappa is Europe’s leading supplier of corrugated packaging and has worked with Spirax Sarco to reduce energy use by 20% at their factory in Western-super-Mare, England, by recycling condensate and flash steam back to the boiler. They also halved water treatment chemicals used, and their water bill fell by £300-£400 a month.

Pernod Ricard produces wines and spirits in 70 nations. They have improved boiler efficiency, upgraded evaporators and driers in distilleries, and reduced steam by 35% since 2002. Adnams makes real ale using a Huppman condensing boiler which saves 30% of their fuel, and they uses waste heat for brewing. They built a giant turf roof, solar panels for 80% of their hot water and collect rain water for vehicle washing and toilet flushing.

Patagonia is an outdoor clothing company . Since 1993 they have diverted 130 million drink bottles from landfill, by only using recycled plastic for their polyester which they use in fleece jackets. Their mission is to give “maximum attention to product quality” while “striving to do no harm” to the environment. They believe that their actions have strengthened the brand and contributed to their profitable growth.
Xeros is developing a washing machine that uses only 2% of normal amounts of water and energy, and a tiny amount of detergent, using 20kg of re-usable plastic chips which absorb moisture and dirt with no rinse or spin cycle needed.

Nanotechnology is saving energy in many industries and transforming many processes. It is a is a form of engineering, using structures only a few atoms in size. NanoLub is a nanotechnology-based lubricant, made by ApNano Materials, which reduces fuel consumption by 5%, and gear box wear by 5-6 times, as well as lowering engine temperature and noise, without harming the engine. It contains nanosized particles of tungsten disulfide, which form a slippery adherent film on all moving surfaces. NanoLub is added to oil or grease, and forms a durable coating so that moving parts are protected for longer, even if there is a serious oil leak.

PiezoMotor is a Swedish company makes very tiny electric motors for mass-market applications like handheld devices, household electrical devices, care manufacturing and medical equipment. These can move levers or rods one nanometre at a time and weigh less than a few grams. They cut usual power consumption almost to zero when doing complex tasks, compared to ordinary motors, and are the equivalent to the jump in power effiency from old light bulbs to light emitting diodes.

Spectris has developed ceramic-tipped blades for paper and pulp industry which last five to eight times longer than steel and have less run-in time. They have introduced many other innovations to save energy across a wide range of industries.

Clorox collaborated with the Sierra Club; a 116 year old American environmental organization to develop effective cleaners. Today, Green Works products are found in most grocery stores. Bottles carry Clorox labels below their own logo and are endorsed with Sierra Club’s emblem.

I could list thousands of other manufacturers who are making huge cuts in the resources they use, at the same time as increasing output. What we are seeing is this: whatever you make, distribute or sell, green tech innovation can save you money, enhance your products, help your image, open new markets and increase your market share.
